Exploring the Art of Koryu Uchinadi Kicks

Koryu Uchinadi is a fascinating martial art system based on traditional Okinawan karate utilising practical self-defence principles. Much like strikes with the hands & arms, kicks are executed at various angles & directions to attack different targets & take advantage of openings in an opponent’s defences. Correct balance, posture, hip movement & other body mechanics are essential to achieve maximum effect.  Let’s delve into five essential kicks taught in Koryu Uchinadi:

  1. Front Kick (Mae Geri): The front kick is a fundamental technique in Koryu Uchinadi. It involves lifting the knee and extending the leg forward to strike with the ball of the foot. Focus on precision and balance.

  2. Turning Kick (Mawashi Geri): The turning kick targets the opponent’s legs, midsection or head. Rotate your supporting foot while lifting the knee, then execute a circular kick. Practice control and timing.

  3. Side Kick (Yoko Geri): The side kick emphasizes power and reach. Lift the knee to the side and extend the leg in a straight line, striking with the heel or blade of the foot. Again, the target can be the legs (knee), body or head.

  4. Back Kick (Ushiro Geri): The back kick catches opponents by surprise. Pivot on the supporting foot, lift the knee, and thrust the heel backward. It can be used when an opponent approaches from behind or by turning 180 degrees to an opponent in front of you.

  5. Hook Kick (Kake Geri): The hook kick is versatile. Start with a side kick motion, but then bend the knee and hook the foot around the target. It can be used to strike the head or legs.

Remember, Koryu Uchinadi emphasises practical application and adaptability. These kicks serve as building blocks for effective self-defence.
